O'Neil, who was in her high school years during the auditions, auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in the beginning of 2005. The judges loved her voice and she advanced to the Top 100 Round. O'Neil was praised by the judges. But she lost badly in both the Top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were shocked by the results and encouraged viewers to show support for contestants with strong singing talents such as Melissa. O'Neil wasn't in the top 3 after a series of consistently outstanding performance. The two other performances she gave on September 7,2005, where O'Neil was able to advance into the final two of the finals of the competition, Werner reportedly forecast that morning the newspapers would be reporting O'Neil's triumph over Rex Goudie and become the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil received a call shortly after her win from Canadian Premier Paul Martin, congratulating on her win of Canadian Idol.
